Unbelief, That Root of Bitterness

It is not the greatness of sin, nor continuance in sin, nor backsliding into sin, that is the true cause of your staggering, whatever you pretend, but solely from your unbelief, that ”root of bitterness” which springs up and troubles thee. It is not the distance of the earth from the sun, nor the sun’s withdrawing itself, that makes a dark and gloomy day; but the interposition of clouds and vaporous exhalations. Neither is thy soul beyond the reach of the promise, nor doth God withdraw himself; but the vapors of thy carnal, unbelieving heart do cloud thee.

~John Owen

from a sermon entitled The Steadfastness of the Promises, and Sinfulness of Staggeringvolume 8 of Works, page 237-8
